...it's never too early to start saving for college. Once the baby arrives, use monetary gifts to open up a 529 college savings plan, says Mike Helveston, a financial planner in Lancaster, Pa. Consider asking relatives and friends to contribute to the tax-advantaged account in lieu of buying clothes or toys.

CNN sought out Rodgers & Associates advisor Lee Pelko to help give a middle-age couple a money makeover. The article, Money Makeover: Fix Our Mix, includes Pelko's assessment that the couple has too much money in their emergency savings.
