Ask the Adviser: How can I Find Fulfillment in Retirement?

In 1986, David Barrett wrote the song titled “One Shining Moment”.  This song is now played to wrap up coverage of the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament championship game.  Highlights from the tournament are displayed across the screen, depicting the agony of defeat and the excitement of winning.  The song is about working hard, doing your best, putting it all on the line, and being willing to try because the moment is gone in the blink of an eye.  What shining moments have you experienced in your life where you felt alive and reached for the sky?  Would you like to help create a shining moment for someone else?

One path to fulfillment in retirement is focusing on helping others.  Here are some ways you may be able to help others find their shining moment:

1. Spend quality time with your family members (kids, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins).

Learn about what is most important to them.  What career goals do they have?  Would they like to start a business, go to college, or is there another dream that you could come alongside them and help them pursue? 2. Create memorable experiences with your family and friends.  Consider taking loved ones on an unforgettable vacation or plan out a weekend full of fun experiences that can be enjoyed together.

2. Consider financially contributing to community efforts with others to address problems that matter to you.

Collaborating with others can foster camaraderie and amplify your impact beyond what you could achieve on your own. Could you provide a unique opportunity for an unexpected person?  Identify the needs in your community and take a step to help by contributing your time and financial support.

3. Volunteer your time serving, mentoring, or coaching.

Is there a charity that has a mission and vision that you are passionate about?  Are there opportunities to utilize your knowledge and skill sets on a nonprofit board of directors, at a church, or as a club member?

Retirement offers a new kind of shining moment—one where you have the freedom to invest your time, talents, and resources in the people and causes that matter most. Whether it’s supporting family dreams, contributing to your community, or simply finding more meaningful ways to spend your days, fulfillment in retirement often begins with a thoughtful plan. Talk with your adviser about how to turn your next chapter into one that’s rich with meaning, connection, and lasting impact.
